PUBLISHER NOTES

(a.k.a. T.C.'s RANT SPACE)

United Comics / Matador Comics

Creator/Talent Submission Guide:

OVERVIEW -
For legal purposes, the terms The Work or The Project refers to material created for the purposes of publication.

Completed projects are preferred, or projects with creative teams in place (ie, writer/penciller/inker/colorist). We can provide lettering, editing and production in-house, but we retain the rights to such work (in other words, if you take the project elsewhere, you are not allowed to reproduce any files generated for the material as produced by/for us without paying us a pre-negotiated licensing fee, other than the original raw work initially provided to us for production).

If it's an original creation, you retain all rights to the work. You grant us exclusive print and digital license to the work for the duration of the negotiated contract. We may also negotiate for other additional rights to the work, such as (but not limited to) movie/TV/merchandising. We may also ask for right of first refusal on your next project.

If the work is a contribution to a licensed or company owned project (not originally initiated or created by you), our agreement is considered "work-for-hire" under copyright law. In this case, compensation for completion of the work as oulined is the sole consideration with regard to any and all rights in and to the work, in all media, in perpetuity.

All original art (the "raw work") will be returned to the creative team involved. Work is anticipated to be returned no later than 90 days following solicitation of the completed work.

Payment -
WE DO NOT OFFER A PAGE RATE FOR INTERIOR MATERIAL AT THIS TIME.
COVER ART IS HANDLED SEPARATELY AND IS PAID FOR BY PAGE RATE AS WORK FOR HIRE ONLY.

Payment is handled as follows-

ORIGINAL PROJECT CREATORS are paid a negotiated advance against royalties to be paid to the creative team on the book. Royalties are 5-7% of cover price or percentage of profit after final sale, to be negotiated at time of contract. Royalties will be payable within 30 days of final sale, along with an accounting of actual sales. If the work remains in print, there shall be an accounting of sales every 90 days along with payment of any accrued monies due.
WORK-FOR-HIRE CREATORS are paid an advance based on project budget, against 35% percent of profit (based on remainder of funds after print costs have been recovered) after final sale, royalties paid within 30 days of final sale. Fee is broken down in this case via the following formula: 45% to the writer/45% to the artist (or in the case of a penciller & inker - 25% to each artist)/remaining percentage to be split by remainder of the creative team (ie, letterer/colorist, etc). If the work is reprinted or collected in another form, creators continue to receive royalties in the same proportion as the original printing but without advance, payments to be made every 30 days.

COMPLETE ORIGINAL PROJECTS:
We need to see as much on the project as possible. Information on the creative team in place is also required. Your proposal should include an overview of the project, page count, type of project (graphic novel, one-shot, miniseries, ongoing series) , genre, characters. Anticipated release date. If your project is complete, submit the entire thing. Giving us as much information as you can helps us in our decision making process. All talent utilized are considered independent contractors and as such are responsible for their own taxes, insurance, etc. With regard to taxes, a 1099 IRS form will be issued to all independent contractors who earn $600 or more in an annual term.

TALENT BANK:
We are not hiring talent on a consistent (permanent) basis at this time. We may hire individuals on an "as needed" basis, depending on the needs of a given project. All talent utilized are considered independent contractors and as such are responsible for their own taxes, insurance, etc. With regard to taxes, a 1099 IRS form will be issued to all independent contractors who earn $600 or more in an annual term.

We are accepting material for our Talent Bank of ready to work individuals. This is an in-house pool of talent that we will draw upon for available projects. Acceptance is not a guarantee of work, however it does put you up for consideration for any available project.

We will also be accepting work from talent that we feel is almost ready, but not quite there. These are individuals that we will try to cultivate into tomorrow's creators.

Talent who wish to submit material for consideration to entry into our Talent Bank of creators we deem "ready for work" must submit the following -
A COVER LETTER, telling us who you are, where you are located, any pertinent contact information (phone numbers, email address, etc.), a brief Bio about yourself including any relevant work experience as pertains to comics (in other words, we don't care if you worked for McDonald's, unless it was in production of their kid's comics newsletter or something like that). We also need to know a general idea of your rate of speed when working on a project (A page every 2-3 days? A page a day? 10 pages a day? Be honest here, it helps us when we schedule a project.) - if you're not sure, that's OK.
ALL CREATORS NEED TO BE PREPARED TO WORK AT A PROFESSIONAL LEVEL,
WHICH INVOLVES MEETING SCHEDULED DEADLINES ON A CONSISTENT BASIS.
Failure to do so can trigger cancellation of any contract agreement, and any monetary advances paid would need to be refunded.

WRITERS

Show us a mock sample of your work, approximately 3-5 pages of story in script form. It doesn't have to be our characters, it could be Catwoman vs. Wolverine if you want. Just show us your skill in the genre you write BEST in. You can, in ADDITION to the sample, submit previously published work.

PENCILLERS

Same as the writers, we need to see how you visually tell and interpret a story. 3-5 pages of story in pencilled form. Not just action sequences, we need to know you can draw the downtime as well. NO SPLASH PAGE POSTER SHOTS, PLEASE. You can, in ADDITION to the sample, submit previously published work.

INKERS

We need to see how you interpret pencilled artwork. 3-5 pages of story in inked form. Please include copies of the pencilled work, even if they're not originally yours. This helps us see your ability over the original work. You can, in ADDITION to the sample, submit previously published work.

LETTERERS / COLORISTS

Submit samples of previously published work, if possible. If not, send us tear sheet(s) of unpublished stuff you've worked on.

WE ARE NOT INTERESTED IN LINKS TO ONLINE WORK (with the sole exception of webcomic work) OR PORTFOLIOS. PLEASE DO NOT SEND THEM. YOU CAN, HOWEVER, SUBMIT WORK IN PDF FORM VIA EMAIL OR ON A DISC. WE PREFER HARD COPY OF MATERIAL WHERE POSSIBLE.

If we do not select your work, please do not take it personally. It may be nothing more than that your material isn't suitable for our needs at this time, or may be similar to something currently being produced by or for us. All art is subjective, so we don't judge your work under any other criteria than our own current needs.
