FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NEW (and OLD) TALENT HUNT!!
Original creator-owned projects sought by UNITED!
Remember some of the greatest stories written and drawn in the history of comics
(like, for example, The Spirit, Plastic Man, Captain Marvel, EC Horror Comics)?
A lot of them were 8-16 pages in length!
The seventies brought in the comic stories that were 17-22 pages in length, then
24 pages, then 32+ pages. Some creators could keep up, some couldn't (remember
the "dreaded deadline doom" which resulted in reprints and fill-in
issues?). As comics grew in length, the quality of the material sometimes
suffered. Or, as is not uncommon today, the comics which had a unique vision
shipped late...or not at all. While some artists may be slow or lazy (and you
know who you are...), a lot of them are just working other jobs to make ends
meet. These jobs keep them away from the drawing table, which makes drawing a
monthly book impossible.
Until now.
This year, we will be announcing a series of projects under two new United
Comics imprints. These projects will consist of stories (or chapters of a story)
approximately 8-16 pages in length. Here's where you come in... We are looking
for talented creators who are willing to produce original concepts for us in
that type of format (if it can't be done in 8-16 page installments, we don't
want to look at it...at least not yet). We are not looking for individual
writers/pencillers/inkers at this time, just projects with teams already in
place (someone who has a concept with no artist or writer attached can contact
us, and we will try to assist you in putting a creative team together, but it's
up to the talent to work out their own agreements). We are accepting material in
ALL genres (please refrain from submitting superhero teams or characters unless
they are incredibly unique ideas, we've a bunch of them in development
already...thanks).
YOU OWN YOUR CREATIONS, we just get publishing (print and digital) rights for
one year (renewable by consent of both parties). Any other rights we will
negotiate for separately.
We pay a SMALL flat rate for completed material, plus royalties on copies sold
and reprints (if the comics sell well, you'll make money!).
Some projects will be the lead in a comic that will feature at least two (and
possibly three) concepts every issue. Some will ship monthly, some on six weeks
schedule. One will be bi-monthly. Lead features will be ongoing, but we are also
in need of "done-in-one" 8 and 16 page stories as well.
HOW TO SUBMIT:
Send either full-size or reduced photocopies, please. No originals! Submissions
will NOT be returned.
Include a cover letter which should include contact info, any previous published
material listed (if you don't have any, it's still OK), background info about
yourself, and an outline of where your project is going, chapter by chapter.
Your story "arcs" should not be longer than 12 installments, and
preferably much shorter (you can submit more than one "arc" with the
same characters, we are looking at stories that can be collected and published
later).
Do not call or e-mail us about submissions! If we're interested, we'll contact
you. Please be patient with us...if you haven't heard from us within 4-6 weeks,
we probably can't use your material at this time.
Do not send us links to a website which has your concept posted. Mail us the
info, please.
Send material as described above to:
